The video above has had 0ver 49 million viewers! I think that young Maria Aragon expresses the ideas behind the lyrics very well.
The opening lines say it all:
“My mama told me when I was young
We are all born superstars”
This is a song that is about the individual’s right to be themselves and to celebrate their own individuality. It is very much in keeping with the unique character of Lady Gaga herself. Unfortunately, due to tragic suicides like Jamey Rodemeyer’s the song has become very much an anthem for the anti-bullying and Gay Rights movements.
The need to combat the senseless loss of lives due to bullying has led to the creation by Lady Gaga and her mother of the Born This Way Foundation . There was a large launch of the Foundation at Harvard over the weekend. The Foundation expresses its mission well in the following poster:
I think that the creation of a braver, kinder world is something that every right-thinking person would endorse. If this foundation helps to save one young person from a needless suicide then it has done its job. Hopefully it will do much more. I wish it well.
